On a mild Middle Eastern morning in January, combat operations seemed standard for the two U.S. Air Force aircrew at the helm of an F-15E Strike Eagle. U.S. Air Force Maj. Peter Kaszynski, F-15E Strike Eagle pilot, and Capt. Jonathan Kipp, weapons system officer, from the 494th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron led a two-ship of F-15Es on a close air support mission. Four hours into the flight, while providing seamless coverage to the Joint Terminal Attack Controller on the ground with the support of their wingman, this particular mission turned into a harrowing situation usually only encountered in emergency procedures simulators.
