What are the differences between brushed vs brushless cordless drill motors?

Brushed drill motors

When it comes to the brushed cordless motors, the battery’s electricity will run through 2 brushes on the shaft’s opposite side

These brushes combine small carbon filaments and the commutator attached to the shaft that will collect current.

The commutator takes responsibility for passing the electric supply from the carbon brushed to the armature that is a bunch of copper wires, tightly coiled and attached to the shaft.

Electricity passing through these coils will create an electromagnetic field.

Do you see the fixed N and S magnets outside of the motor houses?

When these magnets are charged, they will create an opposing force to rotate the shaft.

Brushless drill motors

Compared to the power tool with a brushed drill motor, the brushless motor is more complicated, but both follow the basic principles of opposing magnetic forces. The brushless motor's armature is stationary and put outside the motor while its flip-flopped N and S magnets are positioned on the drill's spinning part or rotor.

The best cordless drill with brushless motor doesn't come with carbon brushes to produce a power supply. Instead, its small and powerful electric circuit board will control power to the armature. Or its sensor can also detect the rotor's motion.

This board will supply the electrical current to the copper coils, which create an opposing magnetic field to furiously spin the magnets on the rotor.

The brushed and brushless motors: Pros and Cons

Advantages of the brushless drill motors

Less friction

The brushed carbon absence creates much friction between the stationary components while a brushless drill produces less friction, leading to less chance of the wear and tear of parts.

What's more, less friction creates less heat, losing less energy. And you don't have to maintain it regularly as brushed motors.

More lightweight

Most brushless drill motors are more lightweight and compact than other types because they don't have extra carbon brushes. Therefore, it's effortless to pick up the brushless drill handle.

Smarter

The circuit board's electronic sensor capabilities can detect how much needed power to perform your particular task more efficiently.

Disadvantages of the brushless drill motors

Higher cost

Because of the high technology and powerful circuit board, the price is high; you will get what you pay for.

Advantages of the brushed drill motors

Easy to maintain

Although the brushed drill motor requires more maintenance, it's straightforward to maintain.

Low price

The brushed drill motors are cheaper than the brushless drill motors.

Disadvantages of the brushed drill motors

- Not as effective as another

- Reliance on brushes

- Heat production

- Lose torque
